On December 18, African Arts Academy celebrated their end of the year holiday season dinner reception. It was an incredible soiree, filled with art, music and great people. Two dishes were on the menu, Poulet Yassa from Senegal, and Zan-beh from Cote d'Ivoire. Food was sponsored by Bissau Baobab, a well known Senegalese restaurant in the bay area owned by Marco Singhor. The evening entertainment showcased, iconic West African musicians such as Jessahbi from Cote d'Ivoire and Dr. Yacine Kouyate from Mali. The audience was internationally diverse , with people from allover the world. Amongst these guests, were MIT Venture Mentor, Michael Fox of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, author Daphne Evans, who just released her new book "Beyond Beauty: A Warrior's Story, by Daphne Evans", Sheila Ash, owner of Noe's Nest Bed and Breakfast, Angah Miessi and Andre Kouame, both, former presidents of the northern California Ivorian community organization, Ivoire Alliance, and also members of the Abidjan-San Francisco, Sister City. The big winner of the evening was Thomas Simpson, a well known San franciscan Philanthropic, artist, actor and African American art advocate, who bought a rare painting of President Barak Obama, during the art auction, one of African Arts Academy's selections.
And, one of the best reviews received that evening, came from Alexander Elsen, a Scottish business man, visiting San Francisco, and who heard about African Arts Academy's event through a friend, he stated;
"this is by fare, the most amazing experience I have ever been apart of, in my life! Where I come from, we don't know much about Africans, all we see and hear, is on TV, but tonight was an education moment for me, I learned a lot, not only from the African culture, the history, the food, music and art, through African Arts Academy, I am very happy to be here!".
You would think that anyone in the world would know about Africans, but some of them, are only aware, of the stereotype and not the positive side of them. Dr. Yacine Kouyate, ask the audience, to seat in circle around the tables, everyone followed his wish, he gave a brief history about ancient Africa, and trades... in the end it all ended with music and dance, like it is done, under the moonlight in Africa, children amongst the audience, who came with their parents, were just amazed, it was just beautiful! With African Arts Academy, you can learn the true history of Africa, and also understand, how art connects humanity from generations to generations.
